Tools Used In Wicca Or Witchcraft

Main Tools

Athame/Sword

(ah-thah-may) Normally a dark or black handled, double sided knife or dagger. Normally dull, used to direct energy, not to cut anything.

As it is used for directing energy, it is often used for casting the circle or empowering an object.

In some traditions the Athame is associated with Fire, but in most traditions its the tool of the East and is associated with Air. In other opinions it can be used for either, depending on the type of working involved.

This is a masculine tool so therefore it is linked to the Gods.

Wand/Staff

The wand or staff is made from different types of wood; the length varies. It should be fairly straight, comfortable in your hand and not so long as to be unwieldy. Wood from a building supply store may also be used. Remember though, if you take your wood from a living tree, to ask the tree first, and then thank it for its sacrifice. Make your wand your own by carving or painting symbols on it, adorning it with ribbons, whatever makes your wand special to you.

The wand is mostly used to invoke the Gods and/or Goddesses, direct energy, and charge or empower other objects. Also used to draw symbols on the ground and ever stir the cauldron.

The tool of the South and is associated with Fire.  In some traditions it is used as a tool of Air. Like the Athame, it may be used for either, again depending on the type of working involved. This is also a masculine tool so therefore is sacred to the Gods.

Cauldron/Chalice

The cauldron is normally a three-legged vessel, ideally made of iron and has an opening smaller than the body.

These are used for magickal brewing and cooking and used for scrying.

The tools of the west and are associated with Water. These are feminine in nature and represent the Goddess, fertility and femininity.

Pentacle/Stone

Of all the symbols and tools used in Wicca and Witchcraft, this is probably the most misunderstood. The pentacle is usually a flat piece of wood or metal inscribed with a pentagram, the five point star.

The pentacle came from ceremonial magick and has been used in ritual and magick for thousands of years. It is used to represent feminine energy and to consecrate objects such as amulets and charms. The pentacle is also a traditional symbol of protection and is one of the official symbols of Wicca.

The pentacle is the tool of the North and is associated with Earth. It is feminine in nature and represents the Goddess.

When it is used by Wiccans, the single point is pointed up, not to be confused with the Satanic version which is inverted (two points up).

Other Options

Censer

This is an incense burner. It can be an ornate brass burner that hangs from chains or something as simple as a small ceramic bowl.

Used to burn the incense that is often offered to the Deities, as well as being used to invoke the spirits of the Air, the Sylphs and Faeries. This is the tool of the element of Air.

Broom

Traditional Witch's Brooms are made of ash, birch, and willow, but can be made of just about any wood available.

Used for protection and for cleansing sacred space, physically and magickally. This is associated with Water and is sacred to both God and Goddess.

Book Of Spells (BOS)

The BOS stores information sacred to the wiccan/witch that writes their own spells and copies of spells and information.

You can use plain white paper or lined paper. Personally, I suggest writing on lined paper, with the holes, so that you can put anything you write down in a three-ringed binder. Or keep a hole puncher handy.
